Man behind bio-med waste seizure suspended

Man behind bio-med waste seizure suspended

Deputy health officer Manish Fency, the man responsible for carrying out raids across north zone of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation

(AMC) that led to seizure of over 50 tons of illegal bio-medical waste, is in docks.

Fency has been suspended by AMC authorities for failing to carry out precautionary health measures in north zone to prevent the outbreak of jaundice. The north zone is reported to have a local outbreak of jaundice in Hirawadi area, with more than 140 cases of jaundice reported.

Justifying Fency's suspension, municipal commissioner IP Gautam said, "Despite the 98 initial cases of water-borne diseases in Hirawadi due to contamination, Fency failed to take any precautionary measures. The cases increased in the last four days and we learnt that Fency did not even prepare a preliminary report. It is for this reason that we have suspended him."

Rumors doing the rounds, however, insisted that Fency was being punished for seized medical waste curiously going missing from the sealed godowns in north zone, a lapse which has not gone down well with the higher authorities in AMC.
